Salt + Water + Electric = Innovative Cleaning that Is Safe, Natural, and Effective

March 15, 2026

A cleaning revolution has been building in the world of facilities management and the use of cleaning and disinfecting products.

Increasingly, facilities have been turning to electrochemically activated solutions (ECAS) when looking for products to clean, de-grease, and disinfect surfaces from counters, sinks, and toilets to glass, carpets, and hard floors.

Aramark Facilities Management has been partnering with PathoSans, a company that specializes in ECAS cleaning, which offers a range of benefits including:

  • Sustainability: PathoSans eliminates the need for buying, shipping, storing, handling, and disposing of conventional cleaning chemicals, significantly reducing environmental impact.
  • Safety: PathoSans solutions contain no dyes, fragrances, additives, and give off no VOCs, making them safer for people, animals, and the environment.
  • Efficiency: Reducing the need for multiple cleaning products and their packaging can create substantial cost savings—and the PathoSans simple solution creation and deployment process can reduce time spent by associates.
  • Efficacy: The solutions kill 99.9% of bacteria in seconds, preventing infections and odors, and are effective against a wide range of pathogens, including the virus that causes COVID-19.
  • Environmental Responsibility: PathoSans solutions are free of hazardous chemicals and are recognized as part of an effective, environmentally responsible cleaning program.

"Aramark has been in the forefront of testing, piloting, and implementing sustainable cleaning solutions for decades,” said Mike Mollerdino, Director of Deployment and Business Optimization, Aramark Facilities Management. "We continually research partners and products that deliver sustainable solutions efficiently and effectively. PathoSans filled that need with dependable ECAS generators; safe, effective solutions; and a competitive price point.”

1 Generator, 2 Powerful Solutions

With just water, salt, and electricity, a single PathoSans generator can create one of two electrochemically charged products at the flip of a switch, replacing up to 95% of standard janitorial chemicals:

  • PathoClean—an all-purpose, odorless sodium hydroxide cleaner and degreaser—retains a slight electrical charge that attracts soil and leaves no residue. A third party, independent testing entity found PathoClean as effective (or more effective) than many leading national cleaning products as a general purpose cleaner for glass and mirrors, floors, and carpets.
  • PathoCide is a hypochlorous acid sanitizer and disinfectant used as an effective food contact surface sanitizer and broad-spectrum hospital disinfectant, among other uses. It has a very high oxidative power; contains no dyes, fragrances, or other additives that can leave a residue; is VOC-free; kills pathogens in seconds, including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19); and requires no EPA toxicity hazard warning labels, unlike other disinfectants.

Both PathoClean and PathoCide are safe on drains—and can be used in most of the cleaning equipment Aramark Facilities Management currently uses, including autonomous robotic equipment.

“We’re seeing success with PathoSans ECAS across a growing portfolio of Aramark clients because of the solutions’ effectiveness, safety, and sustainability benefits,” said Mollerdino.

Dozens of PathoSans generators are currently in operation across Aramark Facilities Management accounts in the US—and there are plans to expand nationally and globally.

Clean and Safe Enough for School Children

The Aramark Facilities Management team at Arizona’s Chandler Unified School District uses PathoSans every day for the general cleaning of classrooms, offices, and restrooms at 57 district schools that serve more than 42,000 students.

“The custodial department has received many compliments on how well cleaned the rooms and carpets are after being extracted solely with PathoSans products,” said Justin Tocher, CPMM, Resident District Manager, Aramark Facilities Management.

Because the product leaves no harmful residue for students and staff, the innovative technology was chosen for its safe and effective cleaning properties.

A Major League Win

When baseball season opens at Oriole Park at Camden Yards this month, PathoSans will be in use for the Aramark Facilities Management team members on site.

“I used PathoSans successfully at a convention center in Dallas, where I previously worked for Aramark,” said Jeffrey Grover, General Manager, Aramark Facilities Management. “We had great success there and I knew it would help support our current client’s goals of maintaining clean environments with environmentally friendly options.”

A LEED Certified building, Oriole Park at Camden Yards is the first Major League Baseball stadium to install the PathoSans technology.

Supporting a Campus’ Sustainability Goals and Much More

Five years ago, Aramark Facilities Management started utilizing PathoSans generators at a large private university client in southern California that serves more than 37,000 students each year.

Initially brought to campus to support the university’s environmental sustainability goals, the ECAS generators have delivered so much more.

“I have been working with electrically activated water for the last 15 years in this industry," said Julian Gonzalez, Resident District Manager, Aramark Facilities Management. “PathoSans has perfected this technology so that their chemistry is useful to frontline employees while providing an environmentally responsible way to clean high-use facilities through reducing airborne particulates, as well as chemical residue on our surfaces.”
