Career Built on Hospitality: Gary Crompton Honored with SHFM Lifetime Achievement Award

November 2, 2026

For Gary Crompton, hospitality has never been simply about food. It’s about people and the moments that make them feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. That philosophy guided him throughout a 35-year career with Aramark and recently earned him the Jay B. Silverstein Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Hospitality and Foodservice Management (SHFM), recognizing his longstanding contributions to the corporate foodservice and workplace hospitality industry. For Crompton, President and CEO of Aramark’s Workplace Experience Group, the honor also provided an opportunity to reflect on a career and passion for hospitality that began in an unlikely place.

“I stumbled into this industry,” Crompton said. “I knew almost nothing about Aramark. Thirty-five years later, that one move ended up shaping everything.”

Crompton’s hospitality career began at 14, washing pots at a local restaurant before training as a chef. He joined Aramark in 1991 as a Foodservice Director at Citi and went on to hold leadership roles across operations, sales, and executive management, including nearly three decades in what is now the Workplace Experience Group. Throughout his career, he has built a leadership philosophy centered on humility and approaching every interaction with a service mindset. While he often reminds teams to keep challenges in perspective, he also emphasizes the responsibility to deliver for clients and guests.

A strong believer in developing people, Crompton has always focused on empowering leaders rather than remaining involved in every decision. He believes leaders are most effective when they create opportunities for others to grow, trusting their teams with responsibility and accountability. That same emphasis on trust extends to client relationships, where he credits long-standing partnerships to consistency and a willingness to take ownership when things go wrong. For Crompton, leadership is not defined by avoiding challenges but by being present to solve them.

“Having worked with Gary for many years, I’ve seen firsthand that his impact extends well beyond the businesses he has led. His focus on people, clients, and developing the next generation of leaders has been a hallmark of his leadership and has left a lasting impact across Aramark,” said Marc Bruno, Chief Executive Officer, US at Aramark.

That mindset was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he describes as the defining leadership challenge of his career. As his organization lost more than 75% of its workforce in a matter of days, the experience reinforced a lesson that continues to guide him today: leadership is ultimately about people, especially during difficult moments. Whether working with clients, developing talent, or navigating change, Crompton remains focused on supporting people through both successes and setbacks.

Despite a career marked by professional accomplishments and industry recognition, Crompton is quick to credit the mentors, colleagues, and clients who shaped his journey. Receiving SHFM’s Lifetime Achievement Award prompted reflection on the relationships and experiences that defined his career, while reinforcing the impact of a career built on service and leadership. Yet when asked what matters most outside of work, his answer is simple: family. For Crompton, that focus on people has been the common thread throughout his career, shaping both the way he leads and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
