Students at Goose Creek CISD Gain Valuable Experience During Summer Culinary Internship with Aramark Student Nutrition

July 31, 2025

Younger generations, including Gen Z, are increasingly choosing tangible, real-world experiences that prepare them for the workforce right after high school, instead of opting for the "traditional" college route post-graduation. That's exactly what inspired two students from Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District (CISD)—with a passion for culinary arts—to spend six weeks immersing themselves in the fast-paced world of food service through a competitive culinary internship offered by Aramark Student Nutrition. Working up to 30 hours a week Monday-Thursday, the interns were introduced to various roles that make up a food service operation—from working alongside chefs and dietitians to shadowing account managers—through structured weekly rotations.

Since 2016, Aramark Student Nutrition and Goose Creek CISD have partnered to offer high school juniors and seniors this unique opportunity to gain real-world experience through a paid summer culinary internship in both front-line operations and behind the scenes planning.

“The benefits of an internship are invaluable, and our culinary interns did a fantastic job this summer learning all the ins and outs of running a food service operation,” said Chef Raina Carranza, Chef Manager, Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District. “This internship not only sharpens students’ skills but immerses them in the fast-paced environment of a professional kitchen, offering mentorship, industry insight, and a competitive edge for their future careers.”

This summer, the student interns also played a role in assisting with the district’s summer meal program, distributing thousands of meals to students and their families.

Putting Knowledge into Action

In the last two weeks of the internship, the students planned and executed a luncheon for the district’s leadership alongside the catering team. From developing a custom menu, designing graphics with the marketing team, ordering supplies and presenting the event, the interns truly put what they learned in a short period of time to the test.

The luncheon began with a presentation from the student interns where they shared the inspiration behind their menu. The highlight of the luncheon was a heartwarming surprise for Superintendent Dr. Randal O'Brien. Following his recent retirement announcement, the interns—both of whom have a keen interest in baking—presented Dr. O’Brien with a scratch-made "Happy Retirement" cake.

"I was humbled to be selected as the honoree for the luncheon. Our interns did a fantastic job preparing a delicious meal for me and for our guests. I am very grateful to know that our longstanding partnership with Aramark has supported our culinary arts program within Stuart Career Tech High School,” said Goose Creek CISD Superintendent Dr. Randal O’Brien.

Chef Raina, who mentored the interns, commented, "Their luncheon meal was a standout, and I'm confident they'll make excellent chefs if they choose to pursue that path."
