The Local Offers Correctional Officers and Staff a Place to Refuel and Relax

November 5, 2023

Studies show that work environments are a leading factor influencing employee satisfaction. In a high-stress workplace like a correctional facility, creating a welcoming space separate from the justice-impacted population is a critical tool for correctional officer well-being and retention.

To meet those needs, Aramark Correctional Services offers a robust program for officers and other staff members that include full-service cafes, modular micro-markets, and a variety of fresh grab-and-go options to support every client’s staff for every shift. All of the staff dining options focus on quality, health, convenience, and personalization.

“We understand the stress of working in a correctional environment,” said Bridget Schlick, Vice President of Marketing, Aramark Correctional Services. “Officers and staff need a space where they can decompress and fuel up for the remainder of their shift with meals and snacks they want while also providing technology for an easy, seamless experience."

The Local

The newest innovation in this suite of concepts is a convenience market for officers and staff called The Local.

Fully customizable to each client’s needs and spaces, The Local offers a range of staff dining and break experiences, including:

  • A café with a full retail experience officers and staff are used to outside of a facility. The café has a rotating menu to create variety and deliver the latest meal and snack trends backed by consumer insights. With a range of options from healthier fare to local favorites and comfort food, there’s something for everyone.
  • A micro-market with 24/7 self-checkout for barcoded items. Customers can order personalized meals at the touchscreen kiosk and there’s a rotating choice of grab-and-go items.
  • An express area for 24/7 self-checkout offering snacks, beverages, and meals to-go.

Each solution is supported by the latest design and technology, which enables ordering, tracking, and food preparation monitoring to deliver meals that are tasty, satisfying, and safe, while also creating paperless environments.

Camera systems ensure the area and products are secure and 24/7 checkout options include mobile credit and debit payment.

Depending on the correctional facility’s space and needs, The Local may even feature a lounge area for officers and staff to unwind.

Meals are prepared or stocked by the Aramark team with a wide selection of choices to ensure staff members return to their posts relaxed and energized for the remainder of their shift.

Aramark Correctional Service has installed The Local in many accounts across the country and is in the process of implementing a series of micro-markets at Missouri Department of Corrections and South Dakota Department of Corrections. The team will continue to expand the innovative offerings throughout 2024.
