March 12, 2015 - In partnership with the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS), the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization, Aramark announced today that it will expand its cage-free egg commitment to include all company purchases of liquid, pre-cracked eggs in the U.S. by 2020, or sooner if supplies become available. The company has already helped hundreds of its client partners purchase liquid cage-free eggs over the past several years in advance of moving to entirely cage-free liquid eggs. Aramark also buys virtually all of its shell eggs from cage-free sources today and will complete that transition by the end of this year.
Aramark does not raise animals or grow products and relies on suppliers who have said it will require years to change their production methods in order to transition to cage-free eggs. In the U.S. today less than 10% of the total hen-laying flock is cage-free. Aramark is proud to be part of the movement influencing the elimination of battery cage hens.
Next week, Aramark will release a comprehensive animal welfare policy with HSUS that will address a broad spectrum of issues impacting the treatment of animals for pork, veal, beef, poultry and dairy production. In 2012, the company committed to purchasing only gestation crate-free pork by 2017. Responsible purchasing has always been core to Aramark’s mission to ‘Enrich and Nourish Lives.’ The company looks forward to advancing animal welfare as part of its overall corporate responsibility commitment.
“We are pleased to continue to partner with Aramark and applaud their continuing efforts to develop an industry-leading policy for the treatment of animals,” said Josh Balk, Senior Director of Food Policy at HSUS.
