Generalist Emphasis

The program is divided into approximately one week of program orientation, 21 weeks of clinical rotations, 11 weeks of management rotations, and 4 weeks of community rotations.

The Mid-Atlantic Internship is centered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas, as well as Maryland, including Baltimore. The following counties in Pennsylvania have internship sites: Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties.  The Maryland area internship sites are located in Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties.

Classes

Classes are usually held every other week.  The class day may vary to accommodate speakers, events, and professional activities.  Classes for the Philadelphia Interns are held at the Bell Atlantic Tower in Philadelphia.  The classes for the interns in Maryland will be held at the hospital sites.   Classes will include educational sessions, sharing of intern experiences, guest speakers, student presentations and class exams.

Rotation tests are given in the classes. Many of the test questions are similar to the "ADA style" which help prepare interns for the CDR exam.

Community Rotations

The community rotation is 4 weeks. Experiences are planned in the following areas:

Outpatient Counseling Long Term Care / Senior Programs
School Lunch WIC
Wellness Programs Various other nutrition programs

The internship is working with the ARAMARK Corporate Fitness Center at the ARAMARK Tower in Philadelphia to provide nutrition information to employees. The interns plan, provide, monitor, and evaluate a nutrition program for the Philadelphia Corporation on Aging. The interns work with ARAMARK Business Services which provides meals to these congregate feeding sites. Interns are providing nutrition programs to the Philadelphia area schools.

The outpatient settings include dialysis centers, cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes centers, private practice, WIC, and wellness centers.

One of the goals of the internship is to provide a “real life” professional experience. Therefore, the internship is a minimum of 40 hours a week. This may include some evenings, weekend days, and holidays. Interns work the hours of their preceptors. If there is a class scheduled during the week, this is included in the 40 hour week.
