Pittsburgh, Washington “Signature Sandwiches” Face Off for Bragging Rights at 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic

Fans to Choose Between Penguins’ “Kielbasa Grinder” and Capitals’ “Fury”

Pittsburgh, PA, Dec. 29, 2010 – While the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals battle during the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® on New Year’s Day at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field, fans will have a say in deciding another important match-up involving the signature sandwiches served at each team’s home venue.

ARAMARK, exclusive concessionaire at Heinz Field and the food and beverage partner for the Penguins and Capitals, is asking fans to vote for which team’s signature sandwich goes best with the NHL Winter Classic®: Pittsburgh’s “Kielbasa Grinder” or Washington’s “The Fury.”

“There’s no better way to embrace the spirit of the NHL’s signature event than to engage fans in a face-off of their own, involving the signature menu items from both teams’ home ice,” said George Meehan, ARAMARK General Manager at Heinz Field. “Pens and Caps fans are as loyal to their hometown tastes as they are to their teams, so we’re looking forward to good competition on and off the ice.”

Each team’s signature sandwich, as determined by fan voting leading up to the outdoor game, has been added to Heinz Field’s NHL Winter Classic® menu. The sandwiches were developed by ARAMARK executive chefs at Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center and Washington’s Verizon Center.

  • CONSOL Energy Center’s “Kielbasa Grinder”: Thin-sliced local kielbasa, traditional sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing piled on a rustic Italian roll
  • Verizon Center’s “The Fury”: Chipotle-rubbed pulled pork, roasted poblano peppers and onions, topped with Monterey Jack cheese and a bacon adobo sauce heaped on a fresh-baked artisan roll

How to Vote for the “Kielbasa Grinder” or “The Fury”
Fans will use their appetites to determine the winner of the “Signature Sandwich Face-Off,” with units sold taking the place of ballots at Heinz Field.

Voting begins the day before the Winter Classic®, in the NHL’s Spectator Plaza, at the corner of Art Rooney Avenue and W. General Robinson Street, outside the stadium.

During the game, fans can find the signature sandwiches at Heinz Field’s North Shore concession stand on the main concourse, near Section 133.
